Character Discussion: MORRIGAN

MORRIGAN
(Name: Morrigan Aensland)
One of the most famous characters in the Marvel Vs. Capcom series and one of the original cast ever since Marvel Vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes, Morrigan first made debut as a succubus in the Darkstalker series which also became a video game. Morrigan appears as a woman with long, light green hair, a very revealing top, and bat-like wings on her back and on the side of her head. She is vain and enjoys the life of excitement through battles like during her confrontation with Demitri Maximoff and his minions.
She is also the head of the Aensland house in the demon world. When she was born, her powers was so great that one-third of her powers was sealed within Belial; the one who adopted her and the other one-third was on a pocket dimension which then became Lilith.
She is also a very powerful magic user and her bat wings can shape-shift to anything she wants. And because she's a succubus, she live on seducing men and feeds on their lust.

GAMEPLAY
Morrigan's gameplay is very similar to a Shoto character like Ryu and Ken. She is very versatile and a good battery character as well. She utilizes her magic and use her bat wings in battle to shape-shift to any form like a shield, a drill, or a booster which aids here flight and allow her to air dash.

SPECIAL MOVES AND COMMAND NORMALS
  • Soul Fist - Her signature fireball/projectile. She fires a vampire skull to the opponent. Unlike its previous incarnations, her Soul Fist can be fired forward or angled downward when she's in the air and forward or angled upward when on the ground
  • Shadow Blade - Morrigan's Shoryuken-like move. She trusts upward and form her wings like a blade. The strength of the button used determines the number of hits it creates
  • Soul Drain - Morrigan's new move on Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. This move is similar to Soul Fist but the start-up is longer and it steals 30% of one hyper gauge of the opponent
  • Vector Drain - Morrigan's command grab. She drags her opponent into the air and flies using her boosters and then slams them in the ground
  • Splash Libido - Morrigan forms her wings into spikes which staggers her opponent
  • Deep Crescendo - Morrigan high kicks her opponent which she launches into the air and her heels form like a blade
  • Flight - Morrigan initiates her flight mode. She has a pink aura and flies together with some bats
  • Dark Harmonizer - An assist only move. Morrigan arrives and blows a kiss which gives the entire team 30% of one hyper combo gauge
HYPER COMBOS
FINISHING SHOWER (Level 1 Hyper Combo) - Morrigan fires a barrage of missiles coming from her shifted wings. This hyper combo can also be angled upward or downward using the d-pad. This move replaces her Soul Eraser hyper which was first introduced on Marvel Vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes.

SHADOW SERVANT (Level 1 Hyper Combo) - Previously called Silhouette Blade, a wave based move where she summons her shadow clones and slashes her opponent in a Shadow Blade-like fashion and hits OTG.

ASTRAL VISION (Level 1 Hyper Combo) - Morrigan summons a mirror image of herself from behind the opponent. The clone copies all her moves and will disappear after 10 seconds or if she performs another hyper combo.

DARKNESS ILLUSION (Level 3 Hyper Combo) - Morrigan's most famous hyper combo. She flies forward to the opponent and if she connects, she will summon a clone behind the opponent and do a series of hits while on the ground and launches her opponent into the air with another series of attacks and finally slams them back to the ground. This move does 405,000 of unscaled damage and hits 33 times.

PERSPECTIVE TOWARDS THE CHARACTER
My favorite character during the days of Marvel Vs. Capcom 1 and 2, Morrigan is a very easy to use character. Her normals and special moves are very easy to learn and combines with each other easily. I'm really sad though that her Soul Eraser hyper combo was replaced with Finishing Shower but I now also enjoyed it because I can guide her missiles. I am also amazed that she now has a projectile that steals a percentage of a hyper combo gauge and a utility hyper combo which gives twice the trouble for opponents. I do recommend her to beginners of UMvC3 because unlike Dante, you won't do very complicated button pressing or long and hard to memorized combos. She's just fun to use and she's a user-friendly character if you ask me. I would really like to go on a spin on using Morrigan because I really love her. How about you guys? What's your viewpoint about the fun-loving succubus Morrigan? :)
